Backpacking Cuba on a budget: my 2-Week escapade

Hey all! If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for an affordable and exciting adventure. And let me tell you, Cuba has got it all! From stunning beaches to vibrant cities, and from lush mountains to colorful culture, this incredible island has something for every kind of traveler. And the best part? You can experience it all on a super tight budget!

Getting There

My journey began with a long-haul flight from the US to Havana, Cuba’s capital city. I scored a steal of a deal using kiwi.com, paying under $200 for my round-trip ticket! If you’re flexible with your travel dates and times, you can find some amazing deals.

Accommodation

Once I arrived in Havana, I headed straight to the city center and found a cozy hostel for a whopping $5 per night! That’s right, folks, you can find clean, comfortable, and social accommodation for the price of a sandwich. I stayed in a few different hostels throughout my trip, and they were all around the same price.

Food

Cuban cuisine is a delicious fusion of Spanish, African, and Caribbean flavors, From the crispy, golden croquetts filled with ham, chicken, or fish, to the sweet, sticky churros drizzled with honey, every bite is a taste sensation. But the star of the show is undoubtedly the iconic Cuban sandwich – a mouthwatering combination of ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all pressed between crispy bread. And don’t forget to wash it down with a refreshing glass of freshly squeezed sugarcane juice or a cold beer And don’t even get me started on the coffee – it’s like a taste explosion! With street food vendors on nearly every corner, you’re never far from a delicious and authentic Cuban culinary experience. And the best part? Most dishes will set you back a mere $1-3, making it a budget-friendly way to indulge in the local cuisine.

    Transportation

Getting around Cuba is an adventure in itself, and it won’t break the bank. I used local buses and trucks (called “camiones”) to get from city to city, and they were all under $5. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take a shared ride with other travelers for a few bucks.

    Activities

From hiking in the Sierra Maestra mountains to exploring the vibrant streets of Havana, there’s no shortage of free or low-cost activities in Cuba. I visited the famous Museo de la Revolución for under $2, and it was one of the highlights of my trip.
