Backpacking in Aruba for Under $15 a Day: A 1-Week Adventure from Venezuela

Hey fellow travelers! I’m thrilled to share my experience backpacking in Aruba on an extremely tight budget. I know how challenging it can be to travel internationally, but with some careful planning, you can have an amazing time in this Caribbean paradise for under $15 a day!

Step 1: Finding an Affordable Flight from Venezuela

My journey began with a long-haul flight from Caracas, Venezuela to Oranjestad, Aruba. I searched for the cheapest options and found a flight with Avianca for around $150. Yes, you read that right! $150 for a round-trip ticket from Venezuela to Aruba. I booked it immediately, knowing that this was a steal.

Step 2: Cheap accommodations

Upon arrival, I headed straight to the hostel I had booked in advance. I opted for a dorm room at the Aruba Backpackers hostel, which cost me around $10 per night. It was basic but clean and comfortable, and I met some amazing fellow travelers during my stay.

Step 3: Exploring Aruba on a Budget

Aruba is a small island, and getting around is relatively easy. I opted for public transportation, which is very affordable (around $1.50 per ride). I also walked or hitchhiked whenever possible. Some must-visit spots include:

  • Arikok National Park: A stunning park with rugged landscapes, caves, and beaches. Entrance fee: around $5.
  • Baby Beach: A picturesque beach with crystal-clear waters and powdery sand. Free entrance.
  • California Lighthouse: A historic lighthouse with breathtaking views. Free entrance.

Step 4: Eating on a Budget

Food can be expensive in Aruba, but I found some affordable options:

  • Local markets: Try the traditional Aruban cuisine at the local markets, like the one in Oranjestad. Meals start from around $3.
  • Street food: Enjoy some delicious street food, like empanadas or fried fish, for around $2-$3.
  • Grocery shopping: Buy snacks and drinks at local supermarkets to save money.

Step 5: Activities for broke ass backpackers like us.

Aruba offers plenty of free or low-cost activities:

  • Snorkeling: Explore the island’s stunning marine life at Baby Beach or Mangel Halto Beach. Free entrance.
  • Hiking: Discover Aruba’s rugged landscapes on a hike through Arikok National Park. Free entrance.
  • Sunset watching: Enjoy the breathtaking sunsets at the beach or a lookout point. Free, of course!

Nightlife:

Aruba’s nightlife scene is a vibrant and eclectic mix of bars, clubs, and lounges that cater to all tastes and budgets. As a backpacker on a shoestring, I was thrilled to discover that you don’t have to break the bank to have a great time. From the lively bars along the beachfront promenade in Oranjestad, to the more laid-back watering holes in San Nicolas, there’s always something going on. I found that a night out in Aruba can be had for under $20, including a few drinks and some dancing. One of my favorite spots was the Bugaloe Beach Bar, where I enjoyed live music and stunning sunset views for the price of a few beers. And if you’re looking for a more local experience, head to the island’s capital, Oranjestad, where you can find everything from karaoke bars to dance clubs, all within walking distance. With its warm and welcoming atmosphere, Aruba’s nightlife is the perfect way to cap off a day of exploring this beautiful island – and it won’t blow your budget!
