Backpacking South Africa on a Shoestring Budget: My Thrifty Adventure

Hey fellow nomads! If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for an affordable and exciting adventure. And let me tell you, South Africa has got it all! From stunning coastlines to vibrant cities and breathtaking natural beauty, this incredible country has something for every kind of traveler. And the best part? You can experience it all on a super tight budget!

Getting There

My journey began with a long-haul flight from the egypt to Cape Town, which I scored for a steal using kiwi.com. If you’re flexible with your travel dates and times, you can find some amazing deals. I paid under $300 for my ticket

Once I arrived in Cape Town, I headed straight to the city center and found a cozy hostel for a whopping $10 per night! That’s right, folks, you can find clean, comfortable, and social accommodation for the price of a pizza. I stayed in a few different hostels throughout my trip, and they were all around the same price.

Food

South African cuisine is a delicious fusion of flavors, and you can find amazing meals for pennies on the dollar. I lived off of bobotie (a savory meat pie), boerewors (sausages), and fresh fruit for under $5 per meal. And don’t even get me started on the braai (barbecue) culture – it’s like a never-ending food festival!

Transportation

Getting around South Africa is a breeze, and it won’t break the bank. I used local buses and minivans (called “taxis”) to get from city to city, and they were all under $10. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take a shared ride with other travelers for a few bucks.
