As I stepped off the bus in Amman, Jordan, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. I had only 4 days to explore this incredible country, and a tight budget to boot. But I was determined to make the most of it, and experience all that Jordan has to offer.
Day 1: Amman and the Ancient City of Jerash
I started my journey in Amman, the bustling capital city of Jordan. I stayed in a small hostel in the heart of the city, where I met some fellow travelers and got some tips on where to go and what to see. From there, I took a bus to Jerash, one of the most well-preserved ancient Roman cities in the world. The ruins were breathtaking – I spent hours exploring the temples, theaters, and streets, and even got to see a reenactment of a Roman army parade.
Cost:
- Hostel: $10 per night
- Bus to Jerash: $2
- Jerash entrance fee: $10
Day 2: The Natural Wonder of Wadi Rum
From Jerash, I took a bus to Wadi Rum, a stunning natural reserve known for its red sand dunes, rocky cliffs, and Bedouin culture. I stayed in a small campsite run by a local Bedouin family, where I was treated to a delicious traditional dinner and some warm hospitality. The next day, I took a jeep tour of the reserve, where I saw some of the most breathtaking scenery I’ve ever laid eyes on.
Cost:
- Bus to Wadi Rum: $5
- Campsite: $15 per night (including dinner and breakfast)
- Jeep tour: $30
Day 3: The Ancient City of Petra
From Wadi Rum, I took a bus to Petra, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. I spent the day exploring the ancient city, marveling at the intricate carvings and towering structures. And, of course, I had to take a camel ride through the Siq, the narrow canyon that serves as the main entrance to Petra.
Cost:
- Bus to Petra: $5
- Petra entrance fee: $70 (including a guided tour)
- Camel ride: $20
Day 4: The Dead Sea and Amman
From Petra, I took a bus to the Dead Sea, where I spent the day floating in the salty waters and soaking up the sun. And then, it was back to Amman for my final night in Jordan. I spent the evening exploring the city, trying some delicious street food, and reflecting on an incredible 4 days.
Cost:
- Bus to Dead Sea: $5
- Dead Sea entrance fee: $20
- Street food: $5
Total Cost for 4-Day Trip: $242
Of course, this budget breakdown doesn’t include the cost of flights, travel insurance, and other expenses. But for the actual cost of accommodation, transportation, food, and activities, I was able to get by on a shoestring budget of just $242 for 4 days. Not bad for a country as incredible as Jordan!
